The recently opened Palermo harbour, officially known as the Palermo Marina Yachting, offers all of the 21st century convenience that one might be missing in the ancient city of Palermo. With high-end coffee-cocktail bars, restaurants and ice cream shops (gelateria), this is the perfect sunset spot to be when the sun sets behind the surrounding mountain range.

At the center of Piazza Marina lies a beautiful garden, Giardino Garibaldi, which is home to Europe’s oldest fig tree. Planted in 1863, the 32m tall Ficus Macrophylla is absolutely spectacular in terms of both size and appearance. Being famous for its numerous vertical roots that span from the tree canopy into the soil and huge roots, providing support for the canopy to reach further out into the sunlight.

A stone’s throw away from the apartment is Piazza Marina. This beautiful square is known for its large markets on Sundays, Mercantino Antiquario, being a cross between flea and antique furniture market. Dozens of vendors surround the lovely gated garden and nearby streets weekly from 7 a.m. to midday. So if you are on the look for beautiful ceramics, vintage clothing, jewelry, or anything in between, remember to start the Sunday at Piazza Marina.
